United Steelworkers and Crucible Steel Co sign a three year pact aiming to end a 34 day nationwide strike. The agreement covers wage increases of 45 to 53 cents per hour and sets stage for recalls of about 650000 workers. 13000 workers at four main plants affected as talks continue with United States Steel Bethlehem Steel and Republic.
A decree in the official gazette authorizes higher gasoline taxes in France, making regular gas about 75 cents a gallon and high test around $1. The increases equal about 1.53 and 21 cents per gallon respectively and will take effect soon. The government already collects nearly 50 cents per gallon and will use part of the extra revenue to finance the war against nationalist rebels in Algeria.

Five persons died in a two car crash on Highway 66 about 35 miles east of Medford. Victims named include Sam Mallon about 52 and his mother Carrie Mallon about 73 of Medford Verbie E Grise and wife Maggie of Dairy Charles E Klaus of Portland. Klaus rode alone and the other four were in the Mallon car.
Michael Mc Ginnis 25 walked into a New York police station and said he killed his wife Lillian 32 and stepson Ronald 13. In their three room flat officers found Lillian dead from head wounds and Ronald shot in bed. A 16 gauge shotgun was used.
Seven year old Haven Taylor licked frost from a dairy pipe in Shawnee Oklahoma and froze his tongue to the metal. Dairy engineer David Flynn halted ammonia flow and used water to thaw the boy after being trapped about thirty minutes.
President Eisenhower signs a bill banning interstate shipment of any household refrigerator without an interior easy exit. The new law aims to prevent children from suffocating while playing inside fridges and becomes effective in two years with manufacturers required to install safety devices per government standards.
Admiral Arthur W. Radford chairman of the U S Joint Chiefs of Staff arrives in Tokyo from Korea for a 24 hour stop. He will confer with U S officials and Japanese Foreign Office and defense leaders before departing for the United States tomorrow.
