Tropical storm Brenda loses punch in the Deep South while a nationwide heat wave bakes the country. Iowa records 24 heat deaths in a week with 100 plus highs. Illinois, Indiana and others see double digits. Brenda generates storms from New Orleans to Pensacola before fading across Louisiana.
Speculator fire crews battle a three acre blaze on Long Pond Mountain under hazardous conditions. Lightning started the fire last week. twenty firefighters, led by Ranger Halsey Page, fight from cliff bases with two weeks of possible work ahead and air support delivering food and gear.
In Copenhagen Soviet scientist Professor Leonid Sedov said the USSR will create an artificial earth satellite within two years and may launch in 1957. He suggested the device could be much larger than the U.S. plan to launch a basketball sized satellite in 1957-58. Sedov heads the Soviet delegation at the Sixth International Astronautical Congress.
Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria, heir to the Bavarian throne, died today at Leusten Castle, the family seat. He was 86 years old.

In Monroe North Carolina a 25 year old mother, Dorothy Wilson, threw herself over her three year old daughter as a box car struck at a railroad crossing. The mother suffered 16 stitches in her hip and 14 in her head while the child escaped with minor bruises.
Washington reports the House passed a housing bill 187 to 168 and sent it to President Eisenhower. GOP leaders hinted at a possible veto and a special session. The measure would create 45 000 public housing units in one year. officials urged at least 70 000 in two years.
Charles C. Boyd 62 of 608 Seeley Road pled guilty in Traffic Court to drunken driving, receiving a $100 fine and a 10 day suspended sentence. He was arrested March 10 after Patrolman Thomas Sardina observed him driving erratically near Croly and Genesee Streets.
President Eisenhower accepts Harold E. Talbott's resignation after Senate probes into his outside business earnings. Talbott, 67, said he acted to avoid embarrassment as he defended ethics. Eisenhower praised his service and set Aug. 13 as departure date.
The 11 American airmen expected to be released by Chinese authorities will fly direct to the West Coast after a brief stop in the Philippines. Families wishing to join them will be flown to Travis Air Force Base near San.
The father of Capt. Eugene Vandi, one of 11 Americans set for release by Red China tomorrow, will fly to the West Coast for a reunion with his son. Mrs. Mary Vandi declines to travel for health reasons but said John Vandi would greet Capt. Vandi on arrival.

A spokesman said the talks with U S ambassador U Alexis Johnson and Peiping representative Wang Ping nan focused only on the detained Americans and Chinese students in the United States. The next Little Geneva session was set for Thursday morning with no Wednesday meeting.
