A village fire in Victor Rochester destroyed six businesses and four apartments overnight forcing closure of several Route 96 blocks amid fears walls could collapse. Officials said two explosions heard near the 10 59 p m report may have been caused by the fire and not suspected arson.
Democratic leaders in the House seek to court conservative Democrats by amending their 1982 budget proposal to add 6.5 billion for defense, while dropping a plan to eliminate the personal income tax cut. The move targets 44 Sunbelt conservatives who threaten to align with Republicans, as the final vote nears.
The Jesuit priest brother of Secretary of State Alexander Haig, Rev. Frank R. Haig, J . 2 ., is among final candidates for Le Moyne College president. Haig visited Syracuse for an interview. two more candidates will come. He chairs Loyola Maryland’s physics, engineering and computer science department.
The Buffalo slayings case edges toward extradition as Army private Joseph G. Christopher faces a Georgia arrest. A sealed grand jury indictment accuses an unidentified suspect of three second degree murders in last year’s killings, while Erie County DA Cosgrove guards the name. Investigators from Rochester and New York City confer, noting similarities across cases in Erie and Niagara counties and in New York City. Christopher joined the Army on November 13 and was on leave late December to early January.
Atlanta officials say a crackdown on prostitution and petty crime yielded 74 arrests as police question suspects about a rash of killings since 1979. Mayor Maynard Jackson and Public Safety Commissioner Lee Brown emphasize informants and closure of the unsolved cases. A missing 13 year old boy, Sean Collier, was found safe in his basement after a brief disappearance.
Albany reports Raymond R. Corbett head of New York AFL-CIO urged Legislature to reject business tax cuts in the 1981-82 budget, arguing cuts would not aid jobs. He supported personal and income tax cuts instead, while noting manufacturing job losses since 1974 and seeking a broader economic development program.
