Federal Grand Jury indicted Eugene Dennis a Communist Party leader for contempt of Congress and Leon Josephson a New York attorney for obtaining fraudulent passports for Communist leaders. Both faced charges of ignoring subpoenas to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee.

In Washington Senator Taft predicts the Senate will reject Morse's plan to divide the labor omnibus into four measures. Morse warns split passage risks a presidential veto, while Taft says only a handful of votes would favor division. The House has already passed a broad labor control bill.
In New York the Arab push for immediate consideration of Palestine at the United Nations faces a tough first round. Five committee members oppose sending the question to the 55 nation Assembly, with only Russia Czechoslovakia and Egypt signaling support for full debate. Dewitt volunteer fire lieutenant Charles J. Connelly 43 of 107 York Road died after slipping and falling beneath a fire apparatus en route to a minor blaze near the Dewitt fire house. Deputy sheriffs say Connelly tried to board the side of the pumper about 100 feet west of the station. driver James Blunden was shifting into second gear. Connelly was also a noted Syracuse area insurance man. Continued on Page 10, Column 6.
Willie Francis, condemned for murder, is scheduled for a second execution by electric chair on May 9 after a warrant signed by Acting Governor Emile Verrett.
Col. Jack W. Durant is found guilty of stealing the Hesse crown jewels in an audacious 1.5 million dollar heist. He receives 15 years at hard labor and dismissal from the Army. His wife Capt. Kathleen B. Nash also faces prison terms in the same case.
Justice Schweinhaut allowed the trial of former Representative A. J. May and three others on war fraud charges to proceed despite rumors of jury fixing. Margiotti claimed a newspaperman relayed talk that defense fixed the jury, a line of inquiry dismissed as general Capitol chatter.
The Agriculture Department reports a general rise in food prices between March 15 and April 15 with a notable exception. It also notes that parity, the basis for government commodity price supports, was pushed up slightly as prices paid by farmers rose.
The House voted 338 to 66 to approve a 200 million foreign relief bill after cutting 150 million from administration requests and imposing strict conditions. The measure targets assistance to nations under Soviet influence, naming Italy Greece Hungary Austria Poland and China as eligible if they meet specific criteria. The bill moves to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which already endorsed a 350 million version.
