The OPA raised points on beef and veal steaks pork chops and other cuts to steer appetite toward spare ribs brains tongues and pie knuckles. Round steak and center pork chops rose to 9 points per pound while pork spareribs and some organs dropped or stayed.
Nazis and Gestapo agents captured a first batch of 18 500 former Dutch Army members on charges of aiding the Allies. Prisoners were sent to internment camps in Holland and Germany. German radio reported broader anti invasion measures as war in Africa continued.
Late news bulletin notes Juliana’s 4th birthday broadcast as a Nazi dominated plea to return to Holland. Also reports Tehran meetings of Allied commanders in the Middle East, interned airmen released to Cairo, Yugoslav mediation talks with Communist Partisans, and Bishop Leonard visiting Northern Ireland to confer with Protestant denominations and U S troops.
U S bombers pounded four Japanese bases in the Solomons including Kahili Bougainville Gatere Kolombangana and Munda as American troops on Guadalcanal killed a patrol of one officer and eight men near Henderson Field. Bad visibility limited effects assessment.
Major General H. L. N. Salmon who commanded a Canadian division in England since September and Lt. Col. C. F. J. Finlay of Niagara Falls Ont were killed yesterday in a flying accident over Southwest England. Salmon was the first Canadian general to die overseas. No accident details were released.
Allied forces on both wings advance in Tunisia. First Army under Lt Gen Anderson repels heavy Nazi counterattacks in Medjez El Bab area and holds most positions. Second U.S. Army Corps advances toward Tunis and Bizerte with French detachments nearing Lake Achkel and within 3 miles of Bizerte.
The War Finance Committee announced at noon today it will decide and announce at 4 PM whether the War Bond Campaign public auction will be held tonight in the 300 Block of South Salina Street. If weather conditions are unfavorable the auction may be postponed.

Delmar D. Wiley, a 21 year old Glenwood Iowa naval aviation radioman third class, was shot down Aug 24 during a mission east of the Solomons. He spent 218 days in enemy territory and on islets near Florida Island before being rescued with nine other airmen. He was helped by natives and later joined by fellow survivors, forming a ten man group brought to an American base.
British and Japanese forces clash anew in parts of Burma’s Arakan district with ongoing ground fighting and repeated Allied air support. RAF bombers and fighters attack Japanese positions while raids target Winthajo in Upper Chindwin and rail lines. rail and river targets damaged with no Allied losses reported.
The Office of Price Administration said it will establish ceiling prices for used passenger automobiles to curb price spikes from a shortage of used cars and dwindling new car supply. Tentative ceilings will be discussed in meetings with dealers in New York City and St Louis next week.
