Acid Spill After Ship Collision Near Ambrose Light
A Colombian freighter collided with a barge 12 miles south of Ambrose Light spilling one million gallons of industrial acid. The 298 foot barge Sparkling Water suffered a large hole and all waste acid entered the sea. No injuries were reported. The incident occurred at 3 30 a m while the barge was towed to the 106 Mile Dump near New York City. The tug Crusader remained undamaged and the freighter’s port of origin was not disclosed.
