President Eisenhower named Dr. James B. Conant to be the first U S ambassador to the Federal Republic of West Germany. The White House said Conant would have the title changed from high commissioner to ambassador as sovereignty treaties with Germany were completed.
Kathleen Hicks born at St Josephs Hospital weighed only one pound ten ounces at birth and is now sixty four days old and four pounds nine ounces. Doctors and nurses praise her progress as she nears the expected birth date May 25 while mother Mrs Arthur Hicks of Cazenovia reflects on previous premature births.
New York 25 year old Mickey Jelke, heir to an oleo margarine fortune, is sentenced to two to three years for inducing Pat Ward into prostitution and attempting to induce Marguerite Cordova. Two trials preceded this verdict with one conviction overturned over press exclusion.
BOM Germany Soviet lieutenant Piotr S gar tmasch, 31, fled East to West Germany after being forbidden to marry a German girl. He walked into a British Army shop with his East German girlfriend, laid his pistol on the counter, and requested political asylum. British authorities granted the request and the officer is believed to have left Germany.
Irene Simon and Caroline Moffatt each claim half the winning house after guessing nails in the exhibit. Simon guessed 58 536 nails while Moffatt predicted 58 534. Officials note both would take half a house rather than risk the whole prize.
Grand Rapids officials call for volunteers to form a civil defense band. Daniel R. Waters, executive secretary of Kent County Civil Defense, urged enlistment to provide music during potential emergencies amid ruin scenarios.

Health Commissioner Herman E. Hilleboe announced 750 000 doses of Salk polio vaccine would reach regional health directors before May 8. Only 28 of the doses were used as a precautionary move to remove Cutter vaccine from supply channels. 6,300 shots previously sent to the state by Berkeley California firm were under tracking by federal state and local authorities amid embargo after reports of infantile paralysis in Western states.
An American B-29 bomber, flying through an overcast near Naha Airport, crashed three miles from the field. Ten bodies were recovered, no crew names released, and it was unclear if all crew were accounted for. An F-86 Sabrejet escort is reported missing. Four Okinawans were burned and hospitalized as wreckage scattered over a 400 yard area.
Governor Harriman named Grant F. Daniels a Republican to a five year term on the State Liquor Authority. Daniels, 41, has been administrative deputy in the budget division and previously served in the Assembly from St Lawrence County. The vacancy keeps a 3 Democrat to 2 Republican balance on the board.
Senator George of Georgia floated the possibility that neutral nations might represent the Chinese Nationalists at talks on Formosa. He suggested an agreed representative could be Chiang Kai-shek’s interest, opposed by Chiang and Nationalist backers. The Formosa dispute centers on competing claims by Chiang and the Communists. Survival City reports fear that three Nevada communities face fallout as weather delays the spring test. About 5,000 observers gathered for the 5 15 AM shot before winds shifted. Alamo Elgin and Calherite are at risk with another weather front moving in from the Pacific coast, delaying possible second shots.

Separate blazes in the Green Mill Hotel and a nearby four story apartment building killed twelve people in Chicago. Fire Captain Edward Duller and eight others were recovered from the hotel ruins. four in the apartment including three children. Investigators said the hotel fire was set by an arsonist and officials sought to determine if arson linked both fires.
Washington reports a cafe manager posts a notice after fork and spoon loss mounting. The sign declares silverware should not be taken as medicine and warns patrons not to use it after meals.
Public health authorities backed the Salk polio vaccine while testing for faults in one of six makers. Eight children were struck by polio within a week of their first shots, one fatally, with four other suspected cases. The Cutter batch was involved in each case.
The Public Health Service reports 106 polio cases nationwide for the week ending April 23, up from 74 the prior week, but below last year’s 117 for the same period. The five year average is 75.
Berkeley laboratories say over 750000 doses issued and halt ordered as precaution pending tests. Surgeon General Scheele supports continuing vaccination in other areas where other firms’ vaccines have been used without incidents. He urges parents and children to keep plans. Several polio cases surface in California as investigators probe vaccine cause.
Assistant meteorologist Alexander Sadowski says fair and warmer weather with a mid- tens high is forecast. Scattered frost possible in some areas with a low around 38 as a high pressure system moves from the Great Lakes toward the southern states and a deep storm tracks east from the Dakotas.
Two hundred state troopers from multiple troops searched a broad Northern New York area for four armed jailbreak suspects. A shoot to kill order was given if resisted as a 12 state alarm and cross-border alerts spread. The fugitives include Frank Talarico of Utica who vowed not to be captured and seized pistols from the St. Lawrence County Jail.
