State workers clash over mural seen as offensive
In Albany an education department mural dating from the 1870s is covered after about 20 of 3,000 workers complained it unfairly portrays blacks. The painting by Adolph deYvon, known as the Grand Renown Painting, hangs at Chancellor Hall and is used for staff meetings. The department says it will remain draped during outside meetings, while critics call it censorship.

Prisoner hangs self after rape sentence in St. Lawrence County
Frederick L. Anson 39 of Madrid died after hanging in a Canton Potsdam Hospital ER cell at 1 34 a.m. Corrections officers found him in a single jail cell following his Aug 24 arrest on a first degree rape charge alleging he forced a former girlfriend's 11 year old daughter to have sex with him on more than a dozen occasions during 1997.
