Women aim to keep UPS jobs during pregnancy restrictions

UPS says a pregnant worker with a medical restriction cannot continue heavy physical duties. Almedia Knox, 25, of Fulton, was told to stay home until delivery after saying her doctor limited her to no sitting more than 25 pounds. California requires temporary light duties for pregnant workers, while federal law does not. The policy hinges on federal rules and local contracts, with doctors often restricting the type of physical labor kept.

Union opens small alternative school for dropouts

In February the Syracuse Alternative Learning Academy began on the former Maria Regina campus, a two story building off Court Street. The program, a partnership between the Syracuse school district and Alternatives Unlimited Inc., serves 34 former dropouts in morning classes plus a separate afternoon program for 17 suspended students. Students praise a distraction free environment and teachers who show up, but note it lacks basics like science labs, libraries, and textbooks.

Justice Souter wrote for the majority, joined by Rehnquist Kennedy Thomas and Scalia.
