Richard Nixon shaped U.S. policy across three decades from anti Communism to opening China and détente with the Soviet Union. His presidency ended in disgrace after Watergate, yet he spurred reforms such as campaign finance limits and the Federal Election Commission. His foreign policy achievements are praised by rivals even as his downfall worsened public cynicism.
Former president Richard Milhous Nixon died in a New York hospital after a stroke at his New Jersey home. Daughters Tricia Nixon Cox and Julie Nixon Eisenhower were at his bedside as he passed at 9 08 pm. His wife Pat died last June. Nixon resigned Aug 9 1974 over Watergate and was later pardoned by Gerald Ford. The Watergate saga reshaped U S politics and journalism, ending a presidency defined by achievement and controversy.
Hillary Rodham Clinton defended her character and her husband during a White House news conference. She said she had no special aid in turning a $1,000 investment into over $100,000 in commodity trades in the 1970s and denied knowledge of any irregularities in Whitewater. She called Whitewater a passive investment and noted money from a failing Arkansas S&L was not known to flow through Whitewater. The Clintons pushed disclosure while critics remained unsatisfied.
