Five members of the Vichy delegation in Washington resign from their posts as the United States firm policy toward the collaborationist regime gains broad French support in the capital. The move signals potential strains in Franco American diplomatic relations amid ongoing tension with Vichy.
Washington reports say gime embassies and consular staff resign over Laval pro Germany policy. Henry Haye's office and others may quit to join Free French. Hull cautions but backs French patriotism while U S relations with Vichy remain day to day after Leahy's recall.
A British spokesman said 50,000 tons of French shipping have been taken over by Japan and are almost certainly ocean-going vessels. He added it would not be in the public interest to disclose details.
A Free French authority cited rumors that Vichy authorities handed several ships in Indo China to Japan and that Tokyo sought more. An official note lists nine ocean going French merchant ships in Far Eastern waters plus coasters and local craft, totaling 85,860 registered tons and over 35,000 tons. The exact count of ships taken by Japan was not provided.
French sources in Vichy said April 22 that only known transfer involved two French ships moved to Japan after Japan requisitioned French shipping in Indo China two months earlier. The United States protested then and France explained its position.

Ivan Lee Marsteller died of a heart attack while driving over Ute Pass Canyon Road in Colorado Springs. His wife, Mrs. Marsteller, grabbed the steering wheel and swerved the car into the canyon wall to avert a plunge, escaping serious injury herself.
