Waneta Hoyt, once thought to have lost five infants to a mysterious illness, was found guilty by a Tioga County Court jury of smothering the children. She faces five murder counts with 25 years to life on each, and sentencing is set for June 23 amid plans for an appeal.
A Newark Valley woman, found guilty after a 12 hour, two day jury reading, faces sentencing in county jail. Her husband Tim Hoyt showed stoic reaction as the verdict was announced. The couple’s adopted son Jay cried and a court audience member fainted. The deaths of Erik Julie James Molly and Noah Hoyt, all under age two, were originally blamed on SIDS before the 1992 reinvestigation prompted the verdict. Jurors asked for death certificates and autopsy records. Judge Vincent Sgueglia ordered all spectators removed as the court proceeded.
The Sun reports a Japanese cult planned to release sarin at Disneyland during Easter weekend. Two men were stopped at Los Angeles airport with instructions and a video tape. Disneyland and authorities called the threat a hoax and no arrest was confirmed by FBI officials.
Timothy McVeigh, described as grim faced, faced charges for aiding the bombing of a federal building at Oklahoma City. Terry Nichols surrendered in Kansas, later jailed for protection, while a NYT report noted another suspect being sought. Toll rose to 78 dead with 150 missing and 200 injured as rescue work continued.

A former Chicago city employee, Robert Russo aged 58, was indicted on perjury and obstruction charges for lying to a grand jury about a no show job for Rep. Dan Rostenkowski. The case ties Russo to $90,000 over 14 years and to a broader 17 count corruption indictment against the congressman.
Two women armed with a knife forced Father Carlos Acosta Lopez at St. Francis of Assisi Church to open the safe. Detective Mark Patterson said the suspects, one in her 40s and the other in her 20s, escaped with about $400 after leading the priest upstairs to the desk and forcing the safe to be opened.
