President Carter pledged to fight to the last vote in Congress for his gasoline tax plan to curb energy use, while denying it is a bargaining chip. He said existing powers allow rationing only in a national emergency and defended other energy and policy items discussed during his energy blitz.
The Zaire government says Kapanga town is recaptured from insurgents who invaded from Angola. Uganda's President Idi Amin arrived in Kinshasa and offered aid to Mobutu Sese Seko as government and Moroccan troops push a new offensive with pygmy warriors. Eight American missionary hostages were held during the March invasion.
Women who buy United States Savings Bonds may omit courtesy titles on bonds. Treasury Secretary W Michael Blumenthal issued the order allowing women to keep marital status private, a change prompted by Karen DeCrow of Syracuse and the National Organization for Women.
In Albany the Jewish community promotes the We Never Lost It bumper sticker by Rabbi Israel E. Rubin. Two thirds of 6000 stickers printed have sold or been given away at 25 cents each. Rubin says the label asserts Jewish faith amid Christian evangelist pressure and ads urging Jews to convert.
Soviet TU-95 Bear bombers roamed within 60 miles of the U.S. East Coast last week, passing over the carrier Saratoga and escort ships before veering off as U.S. F-4 jets scrambled. Pentagon sources note increased Soviet naval air activity and caution that the Bears, with cameras and missiles, have widened patrols from Guinea to Cuba, Guam, and beyond.
The Senate weighs Republican amendments to cut income tax rates while preserving business tax breaks. Carter threatens veto if permanent cuts pass. Javits says the plan would save about 200 dollars for households earning 12 000 to 18 000 and offer rebates to very low incomes.
John Rothenberger Jr. obtained a New Jersey Supreme Court injunction delaying Wendy Chasalow's abortion at six weeks. The order bars the procedure and appoints the man as potential guardian to protect the fetus while briefs are filed.
An elderly Solvay resident Edna Holderman aged 68 died early today from smoke in a third floor fire at 1721 Milton Ave. Firefighters contained the blaze in 10 minutes. Six residents evacuated. An autopsy planned to determine cause. Mrs Holderman formerly worked for Frazer Jones Co. Survivors include two brothers and several nieces and nephews. Services at John G Butler Funeral Home to be announced.
The National Weather Service expects a drop from near 80 to around 60 for tomorrow through Tuesday with intermittent rain. Tonight's low should reach the upper 40s with a 50 percent rain chance. Skies will be variably cloudy tomorrow with a few showers, and highs around 60. Sunday and Monday expect mostly cloudy skies with a 60 degree daily high and a chance of rain. By Tuesday sunny skies return with highs in the 50s.
One hundred persons evacuated from a Long Island Railroad train trapped in a Brooklyn tunnel after an electrical box sparked a fire. The fire department treated one passenger for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Patrizia Spallone, 9, daughter of Dr. Ilio Spallone, was seized by three men as she waited for the school bus in front of her home. She cried out and struggled while forced into a car. She is the youngest victim this year among Italy’s widespread kidnappings, with 230 cases in seven years.
