47 Die In Turret Accident On USS Iowa
Norfolk reports 47 sailors killed in a turret explosion during gunnery on the battleship USS Iowa 340 miles northeast of Puerto Rico. The ship heads to Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico for mortuary arrangements in Dover Delaware. Ten to twelve crew members suffer minor injuries while most casualties were in the fire fighting party.
