In Champaign Illinois Central Railroad City of Miami seven car streamliner derailed near Champaign causing at least two deaths and over twenty one injuries. Conductor Charles Redus fifty who was from Centralia Illinois died in the wreck. Baggageman Woods also killed. Passengers rushed to Burnham Hospital with more expected. Cause of derailment not immediately learned.
The UN Security Council ordered its Balkan commission to maintain an on the spot watch along Greece northern borders. Eleven nation observers in Geneva were to be dispatched immediately. The council voted 9 to 0 to keep Balkan representatives in northern Greece while awaiting further action on the explosive situation. It rejected Russia’s demand for UN supervision over U.S. aid to Greece.
The United Financial Employees Union announced the Wall Street strike planned for Monday is postponed at the request of acting mayor John J. Bennett. The union said the postponement is only for Monday and canceled for that day.
A twin engine Army plane with five aboard was eight hours overdue on a flight from Kirtland Field near Albuquerque to Lowry Field in Denver. Fears of a crash mounted as authorities search for the missing aircraft and its crew.
More snow threatens as a cold front passes Syracuse bringing another inch and a half of snow. General snowfall covers northern New York from Albany to Buffalo and the lower lake region. Forecast calls for light rain or snow with continued cold through tonight Sunday, low around 25. Friday’s low was 31. The weatherman notes the southwest low was pushed aside by a cold front from the upper lake region, disrupting the forecast again.
Coroner and police investigate the discovery of a newborn baby girl found in a car in the 100 block of Granger Street. Grover Greenleaf, 46, of Leavenworth Hotel Elmira, who found the infant, told officers the front door was open and the body wrapped in a white towel on the front seat. An autopsy by Dr. Harry H. Gilmore determined the baby was alive at birth and died a natural death with no signs of violence.
Reports from Taifa say two loud explosions were heard near Haifa port tonight with no details. A constable wounded in one of four Friday attacks on British personnel died in hospital, raising the death toll from the first wave of retaliations by Jewish underground extremists after the hanging of four Irgun Zvai Leumi members.
Senator H Alexander Smith of New Jersey urged Republican leaders to confer with President Truman on labor legislation and seek a bill unlikely to be vetoed. He warned the President would sign a moderate Senate version, while Ellender cautioned the House measure would provoke a veto and argued it overreaches. The Senate plans debate next week on the veto risk and scope.
The O P A plans to wipe out rent controls in parts of 23 states late this month. The rental division said the order will affect portions of 40 of the 648 areas under rent controls. Officials said the order is still in the works and the exact areas affected will not be disclosed immediately.
AP reports that U S Steel and the CIO United Steelworkers wage agreement is poised for approval by the union's wage policy committee in Pittsburgh. The unofficial note suggests the increase may be just under 15 cents, aligning with recent raises for General Motors and Westinghouse workers.
