Michael McDaniel, a 31 year old auto upholsterer in Columbus Ohio, won 1.9 million in the state lottery. He hired a band to serenade his boss Clarence Jones of J&J Custom Seat Covers with Take This Job and Shove It. Jones gave him a few days off to celebrate.
In London, gunmen at the Libyan People's Bureau in St James's Square fired on a crowd during a demonstration against Muammar Khadafy. A policewoman was killed and at least 11 more were injured as anti terror police surrounded the embassy and a man surrendered after hours of siege. Heathrow held several men as investigations continued.
In Syracuse area synagogues including Hempie Beth El, families held Passover Seders Monday. Alexander Vojta, an eight year old, asked the Four Questions, then Rabbi David Sheinkopf read the first part of the Haggadah in English and explained the ritual foods and meanings as the community replays the Exodus from Egypt. The observance emphasizes oppression and redemption during Passover.
General Mark W. Clark, who led the U.S. 5th Army from Africa to Rome and signed the Korean War armistice, died at age 87 after a long military career spanning three wars. Born 1896, he later chaired The Citadel and served as UN Far East commander before retiring. His death followed pancreatic cancer with liver metastasis. he had heart disease and pacemaker use.
Luisa Figueroa, 36, received life without parole for leading a multi million dollar heroin operation. The case, tied to welfare fraud, covered 1979 to 1983 with profits estimated between 4.5 and 9 million dollars. Figueroa earned about 1 million. the Reading operation used a Reading grocery store run by Gilberto Lopez, who got 15 years in prison.
United Press International reports that Attorney General William French Smith and 27 associates charged more than 683000 for a 23 day round the world trip in 1982 to study drug trafficking. Costs cited exclude hotels and some car rentals and a later trip is planned to Australia.
The World Court opens behind closed doors in The Hague to decide if the United States must answer Nicaragua’s charges that mining Nicaraguan ports violated international law. Nicaragua argues US actions breach sovereignty and core legal principles. The U S disputes court jurisdiction and public acknowledgment of CIA involvement.
