Ten Japanese warplanes bombed Port Moresby for the 25th time injuring one person and wounding two others with no damage to key installations. Allied fighters engaged the attackers as raids paused for a week. one enemy plane reportedly was shot down in flames.
In Kansas City on April 17, a typewriter shortage loosens the rush hour jam as several large corporations rearrange office staffs and shift hours. Typewriters run double shifts, streetcar crowds spread out, and workers on night shifts face hardship while others gain relief.
Representative Smith of Washington urged a national shift to wooden cargo ships and sailing vessels to blunt submarine actions. He argued wooden ships stay afloat longer, draw less water, and could be built quickly to free steel for armaments while preserving Allied supply lines.
The speaker warned that Atlantic shipping is under threat as losses climb to about three per day while steel vessel construction lags at roughly two per day. He urged swift action to sustain vital supply lines needed to win the war.
Anthracite operators expect oil burning systems in about 850000 East homes to convert to other fuels, mainly coal, before next winter due to tanker losses and higher oil usage in the war. Frank C Wright, Washington rep of the Anthracite Coal Operators Association, led delegates discussing the conversion and demand for iron furnace grates.
General Douglas MacArthur expects to receive instructions from Washington at any hour to clarify his position as United Nations supreme commander in the Southwest Pacific. It is hoped he can begin next week organizing his staff and focus on operational plans to defend Australia and plan the offensive to roll back Japanese invaders.
The Agriculture Department reports food purchases for lend lease and relief programs exceed 100 million dollars per month. For the year ending April 1 total buys reached 877,353,000 with poultry meats and dairy leading in volume and value. Officials expect expansion of buying operations as shipping improves.
Charlotte Jean Le Nord 25 was acquitted by a Su annevier Court jury after deliberating an hour for the murder of Celeste Frank 50 a Hollywood mystic and her benefactress and instructor. Le Nord admitted shooting Jan 30 but said it was accidental. She wept as the verdict was read and thanked the jury while saying she would be haunted by memories of the woman who sheltered and loved her. The prosecution sought manslaughter.
