Colonial leaders like John Winthrop framed America as God’s new Israel a chosen land to spread light to the nations. The idea of righteous empire guided early policy, the Revolution, and ongoing national self view, with “a City upon a Hill” echoing through era documents and speeches.
Police continued routine leads in the rape and strangling of 6 year old Michelle McMurray in west Rochester. Investigators linked the case to a serial killer of girls with double initials, noting three earlier victims and interviewing several men without solid suspects. The victim died from asphyxia after being strangled. the killer is believed to know the family or victim.
Syracuse resident William P. Gleason, 27, disappeared after splitting from two companions at Cranberry Lake in St. Lawrence County. State police and forest rangers search the Clifton area for Gleason, who was last seen planning to photograph the area with several cameras. He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 145 pounds, brown hair and brown eyes.
Israeli air force jets forced a Saudi C130 to land at Ben Gurion, intercepting it 75 miles southwest of Damascus. The 27 aboard included 23 civilians and Saudi soldiers. three American crewmen were released to the U.S. Embassy. The Americans were co pilot Arthur Phillips, light engineer Larry Chandler, and loadmaster Charles Smith.
Hundreds of anti American demonstrators tore down coiled barbed wire around the U S Embassy in Nicosia and clashed with police who dispersed rioters after two hours. Demonstrators protested a planned American military aid pact with Turkey and ran battles continued nearby.
Democratic state chairman Cunningham testified before a special anti corruption grand jury in New York regarding the alleged sale of Bronx judgeships. He arrived with attorney Edward Bennett Williams at Kingsbridge Armory and declined to speak to reporters as legal battles over subpoena power continued. The inquiry is led by Special State Prosecutor Maurice Nadjari, whom Gov. Carey and A G Lefkowitz have clashed over, with Nadjari slated to finish his probe by June.
In Times Square two Purolator Security armored car guards, William Cotter aged 55 and John Clarke aged 65, were shot to death during a cash pickup at the New Amsterdam Theater by three masked gunmen. The robbers fled without money after holding theater staff at gunpoint and threatening the manager.
