An early morning blast 350 feet underground at the Knox Coal Company mine in Exeter Pennsylvania killed nine miners and injured nine others. Rescue teams recovered two victims near the scene as they searched through debris. Gas was blamed for the explosion and extensive rescue work continued.
Federal Judge Alan Goldsborough ruled John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers failed to comply with the Supreme Court no strike mandate. He granted a two week delay in returning 2.8 million dollars to the union, citing evidence they exploited the Centralia mine disaster to push a strike.
