RAF planes carried out nuisance raids over the Port of Hamburg and eastern and southern Germany. A semi official statement noted residential damage and civilian casualties in northwest Germany. Four British bombers were said to have been downed. German fighters damaged a British patrol boat and a transmitter station on the English south coast was bombarded with good effect.
The Italian cruiser was sunk by a submarine under Lieut. Commander E. P. Tomkinson in the central Mediterranean. Eight minutes after torpedo hits the cruiser broke up and sank, with a destroyer seen rescuing survivors. The loss brings to five the 10,000-ton Italian cruisers sunk in the war. Italy started with seven such cruisers. all four Zara class ships were sunk last year.
Frederick Eichorn, head of the Indiana Public Service Commission, told delegates of the Indiana Bus Operator's Association in South Bend that women will soon operate trucks and buses in the state. He warned the driver pool, currently about 5,000 men, is fast shrinking.

As a war emergency measure, night visiting periods in New York Citys 37 municipal hospitals will be banned beginning next Tuesday. Dr Edward M Bernecker commissioner of hospitals said the move would let staff focus on the sick and injured during night air raid alerts and potential emergencies.

The Lade family farm home, a 14 room two story house one mile south of Bridgeport on the Bridgeport Kirkville Road, was burned yesterday afternoon. Firemen fought from 4:30 P M for three hours. the barn was saved but the house with furnishings losses may exceed $10 000. Origin of the blaze could not be determined.
United States Engineers Office Buffalo says low bidder on the Malone airport project is Richard Hopkins of Albany. The bid was under 1 million dollars. Project originally planned for 413000 dollars. The town bought the 600 acre site on the North Bangor Road last fall and work to begin soon after the contract is awarded.
