Gunman on a motorcycle fired on West Germany’s top prosecutor Siegfried Buback as his car left a traffic light in Karlsruhe. Buback died, his driver perished, and a bodyguard was critically wounded. Police described a two‑person motorcycle team with plate from Ludwigshafen. Witnesses say the rider may be a woman in heavy clothing. Police sealed routes from the city as a hunt for the attackers continued.
The government reports a 1.1 percent rise in wholesale prices in March, the second consecutive large monthly increase and well above expectations. The surge signals growing inflationary pressure and may push Carter administration measures to curb inflation.
