John L. Lewis leads a renewed clash with the Government as the United Mine Workers pledge to keep most soft coal mines closed. The coal mines administration rejects his demand to keep all but two pits shut. The one week stoppage remains unsettled as tensions rise among miners.
The Bella Fuels Administration reported almost 50 million tons of soft coal in consumers stockpiles as of March 1 a 0.6 rise from February 1 but 15.5 below April 1 1946 levels. Mine safety and union action swirl around the Lewis strike as Interior Secretary Krug and Coal Mines Administrator Collisson clash with United Mine Workers.
In the Bay of Biscay a 20,000 ton Oranje ship suffered severe waves that washed four crew overboard as a stewardess Miss G Broer 36 fell while carrying plates. Three crew died trying to save her. The vessel docked with flags at half mast to announce the loss.
A Saturday afternoon crash on Brio Blvd East and Thompson Rd killed two men and injured two others, one seriously. Victims include Robert J. Milner and Vanderpool.
