Unrest Hits Sao Paulo After Protests Turn Violent

In Sao Paulo hundreds of unemployed people looted stores through the night, killing at least one man and injuring others as police faced demonstrators from lower middle class and working class districts protesting high unemployment and 104 percent inflation. Scores were arrested as unrest spread in Brazil’s largest city.

Body of music star found in Arizona motel room

A man found in a Quartzsite motel room is tentatively identified as Danny Rapp, 42, of Danny and the Juniors. Police say the death appears self inflicted by gunshot to the head. Officials pursue positive identification.

Reagan halts major rail strike feared by commuters

President Reagan intervened to prevent a shutdown that would have halted service for 285,000 riders in New York City area. Governor Mario Cuomo urged swift federal action to resolve another rail dispute affecting 85,000 commuters.

Deadly vipers bite teen on Washington bus ride

Louis Morton a 16 year old boy from Washington DC was bitten on the upper right shoulder by a Gaboon viper found in a plastic bag he carried after alighting a bus near the National Zoo. Authorities said the animals were stolen from the zoo during a break in and the boy remained in critical condition at Children's Hospital as a four state effort to locate antivenom continued.

NASA regains control of giant satellite after Challenger loss

NASA reports it has gained control of the 244 ton Tracking and Data Relay Satellite after it tumbled from Challenger. Spokesmen say deployment has begun and solar panels are unfolding, but maneuvering to its planned 22,300 mile high stationary orbit remains uncertain. Commander Weitz and crew faced a steep period as the problem surfaced after launch.

Flaming crude oil spill threatens town water

A Conrail derailment at 1am split three fuel tank cars carrying 90 000 gallons of crude oil, igniting a creek and creating a 10 mile oil slick. Eleven homes evacuated, fires sparked along the creek, and authorities raced to prevent the slick from reaching the Allegheny River.
