America’s new portrait: a more diverse nation by census
The 2000 census shows Hispanics rising to 35.3 million and near parity with Blacks as the nation’s largest minority. Non-Hispanic whites shrink to 69 percent, with California and Texas edging toward minority status. Multiracial identification grows, especially in Alaska and Hawaii, while the New Sun Belt gains white migrants from traditional suburbs. Reapportionment shifts seats and suburbs boom in places like Washington, Houston, and Denver.
