The New York State Health Department reported in February a favorable health record with births up 2,600 and deaths down 41,400 from January. The birth rate reached 16.3 per 1000, the highest in 11 years, while the death rate at 1.18 per 1000 was the lowest for the month.
Paterson New Jersey warps into a possible settlement as 6 000 workers at 60 silk dyeing and finishing plants may return to work today after a walkout to demand a 10 cents an hour raise. Vito Fritz of the Local 1733 federation called it a walkout, not a strike.
Senator Brown warned that most of a proposed 100 million dollar small business aid bill would be lost if enacted. He argued the measure alters RFC and War Plants Corporation aims, risking large loan losses while acknowledging broader defense needs. Brown supported other sponsors’ bill, despite opposition over loan purposes and oversight.
Deputy Sheriff William C. Mortensen reports an eight mile long field of petrified watermelons and squash in a desolate area east of Altadena. Geologists estimate ages at 15 000 to 25 000 years. He plans a cautious return with companions to study and possibly sell souvenirs from the strange deposit.
General Douglas MacArthur in Australia praises U S labor for backing the Allied war effort. He tells CIO and AFL leaders he trusts labor’s role and foresees victory, praising the “indestructible backbone” of workers in mills and mines aiding the democracy.
In Rochester a strike by about 900 Milkwagon Drivers Union members halted all home milk deliveries. The union demanded a $40 weekly wage and 2 percent commissions. the Dealers Association offered $15 weekly and 9 percent, later raised to $20 and 9 percent with a $41 weekly guarantee.
