Italian Lawn Fete For Italian Branch Benefit
The Lawn Fete at Mr. and Mrs. Fred Calvert residence drew strong turnout for the Italian Branch benefit led by Mrs Calvert as chairman. Cream and strawberries were served and Italian dances in native costumes entertained guests. Eclipse Expedition Achieves Notable Solar Photos
The Eclipse Expedition of Sproul Observatory on June 8 produced multiple high quality solar eclipse photos. Instruments included 62.5 foot and 11 foot focal length cameras capturing corona extensions up to about two million miles. Dr. Miller praised the corona as very complex with interlacing streams, and nine spectrograms were recorded. Weather along the eclipse path was reported as excellent.

A Good Luck Fishing Party Delivers Big Catch in New Jersey
Mr and Mrs EKJ Sweeny and Mr and Mrs Jack Winter fished at Fortesque New Jersey on Monday June 10 catching about 70 fish. Mrs Sweeny landed a 35 pound channel bass and hooked a sea turtle with a head nearly as large as a man. Capt McQuillan with 35 years at sea said he never saw such a large turtle estimated about 100 years old and 150 pounds. The bass was later displayed in Booths Bakery window to prove the tale real.

Mary Horn longtime Swarthmore resident dies at home
On May 30 Miss Mary Horn died at her Union avenue home. The last member of her family, she lived alone since her brother’s death. She left $200 to Mrs. Quinn who cared for her, $100 to Mr. and Mrs. Colley, and the remainder of her money and land to distant relatives.

On June 6 the Delaware County Association of Women's Clubs held an all day Swarthmore Women's Club meeting. Delegates from county clubs attended the morning session and the open afternoon meeting. Mrs. Martin B. Young was elected president, with Mrs. William Craven first vice president, Mrs. Marshall Smith second vice president, Mrs. J. Lynnee secretary, and Mrs. St. O Boyd treasurer. War service committees reported as the theme of the sessions.

Abel Mahan of Swarthmore Dies at 78
Abel Mahan of Swarthmore died after a two week illness at age 78 from angina pectoris. Funeral services will be held at his home 318 North Chester Road Friday at 7 30 pm. The remains will be taken to his former home in Trenton New Jersey for services at the Friends Meeting House Saturday morning.
