A damaged wartime notice from Pennsylvan State College mentions a five flag with about 650 names and a college class marked on it. It notes 45 faculty members and emphasizes recruiting for agricultural work to increase food production and support the war effort.
Notice warns all Nes bill recipients that payment is due by June 15. Non payment does not exempt the debtor from charges and excess profits. The message warns collection actions by the revenue bureau and urges prompt remittance to avoid penalties.
E C Shillingford and George Bishop open the Springfield Garage at Yale and Myrtle opposite the brickyard in the former Acker man’s Garage. Both men bring West Coast gasoline engine experience and Ford Detroit exposure. They promise prompt courteous service with no charge if the problem remains unsolved and urge motorists to consult them for repairs.
Dr William Z Ellis, recently back from Europe and the Western Front, spoke to a packed Woman's Club House in Swarthmore. The audience’s enthusiastic response matched the speaker’s wartime experiences and uniformed appearance with gas mask.
Mary Lyon school juniors presented A Mid-Summer Night's Dream on Monday evening. Seniors will perform Pomander Walk outdoors at four, followed by a Glee Club concert at 8:30, with commencement exercises on the evening of June 14.
Pennsylvania State College sits in the center of the Keystone State on an 80 acre campus with 30 buildings. Old Main opened in 1850 as the school grows under President Dr. Edwin Erle Sparks. The college owns 1600 acres and controls 200 more acres.
The Ideal Theatre in Morton announces a June 22 showing of Maeterlinck’s The Blue Bird, a wondrous tale about the search for happiness.
A citizen paid three dollars for a one year subscription to the News praising the paper for its patriotic service and noting the editor’s low pay. The note commends the effort and its community value.
Summer intermissions begin next week to meet publication costs. The plan is to drop a few issues instead of raising subscription prices. Watch for the June 21 edition.
Senior class of the High School presents Daughters of Dawn at the Woman's Club House on Wednesday evening June 19 directed by Joseph Gould and Guernsey Moore. Proceeds go to Emergency Aid. The pageant traces women's spiritual mission through history with scenes of inspiring women.
The Swarthmore Prayer Group marks the second Sunday of each month with fasting and prayer for nations to turn to Christ and seek spiritual guidance. All who agree are urged to join on Sunday June 9 to open eyes to truth and aid humane world safety.
