Berkeley Elects Widener as Mayor amid radical coalition

Warren Widener, a former SAC officer, was elected Berkeley mayor with three radicals joining his City Council. Widener proposes police under an elected commission, replacing the city manager, and a progressive municipal income tax. The win followed large black and white antiwar turnout. In Seattle, Leslie Bacon, 19, a witness in the Capitol bombing case, was questioned by a federal grand jury, with critics calling the probe a fishing expedition into antiwar politics.
