Strike closes southern West Virginia coal mines
United Press International reports the United Transportation Union strike against Norfolk and Western Railway causing seven southern West Virginia mines to close on Monday with about 1,500 workers. Up to 200 more mines in eight counties may shut Tuesday, threatening 350 mines across West Virginia Virginia and Kentucky and over 48,000 miners idle. Island Creek Coal Co. could keep about half its mines open for a month by stockpiling coal.
