Maryland researchers rear shad for Chesapeake Bay restocking
Maryland scientists at Manning Hatchery study a humane natural spawning method for American shad to rebuild the Chesapeake Bay population. In contrast to the old gill net method that killed females and yielded about 20 percent of eggs, the new approach mixes adult shad in tanks to spawn, then releases eggs- now about 80 percent hatchability - back into the bay. Early trials included raising larvae to fingerlings at Potomac Electric Power Co ponds and releasing them into the Patuxent River to test survival and potential return to spawning in four to five years.
