One Cent School Sales Tax Considered in NC Counties

North Carolina officials expect to ask the General Assembly for a bill allowing counties to levy an additional 1 percent sales tax for school construction. Nash Cabarrus Jones and Pamlico counties lead the push as a potential 1995 agenda item supported by the County Commissioners association and Ed Regan. Jones County Seeks 1 Percent Sales Tax for Schools

Jones and Pamlico County public schools back a 1 percent sales tax to fund needed school buildings. Officials estimate $6 million to $9 million in construction needs, with the new tax raising about $250,000 annually and $270,000 currently from the 6 percent tax. A $700,000 balance from accumulated sales tax remains.

Cherry Point completes CH 53E overhaul 44 days early

The CH 53E Super Stallion overhaul at Cherry Point NADEP finished 44 days ahead of schedule. Depot director Joe Cunningham called the unit the rotary wing depot, highlighting a strengthened position as BRAC 95 decisions unfold. By June 1995 Cherry Point will be the sole repair site for Navy Marine Corps and Air Force H 53 aircraft, with three more CH 53Es due for repair this year.

Law allows Savannah River nuclear waste shipment after appeals fail
