Chamber forum scheduled for Halloween night in Havelock

The Havelock Chamber of Commerce invites candidates for federal state county and judicial seats to a Halloween night question fest at Havelock City Hall from 7 to 10 p.m. The format welcomes questions from residents and the media with costumes optional and no mention of treats. Sun Journal will pose questions to candidates.

Craven County Tops District Retail Sales In 1992 Rank

Craven County ranked fourth in the 3rd congressional district and in the top quarter statewide for 1992 retail sales. Totaled 590.7 million, with Pitt at 912 million, Onslow at 793.6 million, and Wayne at 664.8 million leading the district. Statewide 44,164 stores posted 49.6 billion in sales, up 27 percent from 1987.

Havelock man wins state pork cookoff in Newport

Ernest Reason of Havelock won the North Carolina Pork Producers Association state cookoff at Newport. He received a $2,000 prize and a trophy, leading a team that included his wife Joan Glenda Tyler and sponsors. Jury noted showmanship and crisp skin as key factors, with meat judged on doneness tenderness and moisture. Proceeds from the $4.50 plate benefit the American Heart Association.

Ghost Walk and Halloween Parade Light Up New Bern Streets

Ghosts and goblins filled New Bern during Friday's Ghost Walk and Children's Halloween Parade. The top photo shows Ghost Walk participants with Pvt. Keefer also known as Michael Smen in front of the Jerkins Richardson house on Craven Street. About 350 children joined the parade sponsored by downtown merchants along Middle Street.

Rumor of Cherry Point NAVFAC Layoff Declared False

Rep Martin Lancaster confirmed no layoff of 379 at Cherry Point Naval Aviation Depot. Secretary John Dalton told him temporary workers would be extended to March 1995 and kept on full time if approved. The rumor tied to Base Realignment and Closure plans and potential workload shifts.

Former New Bern officer sues city and police chief

Kathleen Conran a six year veteran of the New Bern Police Department sues the city and Police Chief alleging sex and sexual orientation bias after she was fired July 1 1993 following a Police Civil Service Board ruling for conduct unbecoming an officer The suit asserts discipline was harsher for a female officer than for male colleagues and questions actions against other officers while noting Conran faced allegations including off duty incidents at Wal Mart and a restaurant The city denies discrimination citing state law and says it will not discuss disciplinary actions and that the force includes 14 female officers among 53 full time sworn staff and seven male reserve officers and 14 female full time sworn officers.
