Community seeks memorial at historic graveyard site

Pamlico County moves to fence and clear Graveyard Point graveyard after years of dispute over ownership and neglect. In December 1993 a consulting firm advised debris removal and fencing to protect the site, with plans to erect a plaque honoring those buried there including lighthouse keepers. Historic surveys from 1989 and 1939 identify unmarked graves dating to at least 1865, among 14 family members linked to Ambrose and Walter Jones. The Neuse River lighthouse keeper burial and a Civil War era location near Broad Creek frame discussions for a memorial tribute.
