Forecasts show increasing cloudiness overnight across New Bern and North Carolina with mild temperatures. Lows near 62 with easterly winds 10 to 15 mph. Friday brings more clouds and scattered showers by late afternoon with highs around 70. statewide rain likely western regions tonight, cooler 40s west to 60s near the coast. Friday expects rain or showers across northern and eastern areas with highs from the 50s to near 70.

Evelyn B. Stewart Everett 72 of Greensboro formerly of New Bern died Tuesday at Moses Cone Hospital Greensboro. Two Lejeune Marines Dead in Mine Explosion

Two Camp Lejeune Marines were killed and 12 others injured during a mine clearing exercise at Fort A.P. Hill Virginia. The incident occurred around 4 45 p m during a line charge detonation training with the 24th Expeditionary Unit. Nine injured Marines were treated and released, while 11 sailors and one Marine were moved to medical facilities. the most seriously injured Navy corpsman remained in critical but stable condition with second and third degree burns. Names of the dead Marines were being held pending next of kin notification.

Lancaster of 400 West Farm Life Avenue reported robbery and assault while hitchhiking in Vanceboro. four black males allegedly robbed him, dropped him off, then picked him up near Spring Garden Road. AP report states Evangelista Vis, convicted of 1983 killings in Greenville involving his sister Maria Isabel Navas Villabona Ramirez and her child, died in prison where he served life plus two years after a 1984 first degree murder and involuntary manslaughter conviction. The case centered on the deaths linked to Navas Villabona Ramirez and an eight year old.
