Spill at Cherry Point triggers 3 day cleanup estimate

Environmental engineers at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station oversee the cleanup of more than 5000 gallons of aircraft fuel after a valve malfunction. The spill near Roosevelt Boulevard and 6th Street disrupted traffic and prompted a response from the air station fire department provost marshals and MP. Investigators report fuel back-flow from a railroad tanker to an underground storage line into a surface drainage ditch. Contaminated soil cleanup continues with absorbents and soil removal. no threat to Slocum Creek or nearby waterways is confirmed. The incident is reported to the state environmental agency and remains under investigation.

Pamlico County social services chief resigns for DC post

Pamlico County Director of Social Services Carolyn Kennedy will resign October 31 to become executive director of Children and Family Service in Washington DC. Her pay will nearly double. she earned under 33000 annually. County Manager Bill Rice notes the vacancy will create a hole in programs while replacement is sought. Kennedy previously led Friends of Children in DC and has a residence in Silver Spring Maryland.

DOT board OKs new bridge for road near Fort Barnwell

The North Carolina Board of Transportation awarded a 1.1 million contract to Carolina Bridge Co. to replace a 41 year old wooden span over the Neuse Overflow Creek. A 248 foot two lane concrete and steel bridge will be built west of the existing structure and completed by August 1996. The old bridge will be demolished after completion. Trent Woods resident Bob Mattocks serves as District 2 representative on the board and notes protections for small streams and wetlands during construction. Grass will be planted to cover disturbed ground.

Price is Right aide falls short on prized chess set

Jeannie Cleaton, a teacher's aide, bid 976 dollars on a mahogany and leather chess set worth about 1250 dollars during a California taping. She hoped to meet Bob Barker, and the announcer called her name as she joined the show. The set remains in her home, illustrating the miscalculation.

McCotter Boulevard Baptist Church wins chili festival miracle

Denise Cornwall represents McCotter Boulevard Baptist Church at Havelock City Park for the 13th annual North Carolina Chili Festival. The 1991 top prize is recounted as a miracle when a cook mistakenly used beans and no meat, later corrected before judging. The church entered the contest in 1989 and now vies for slots among about 40 entries to promote the church’s community role.

Church Chili Cook-off draws community and cash prizes

Den ise Cornwall cooks for the Havelock church entry as part of its three big annual outreach events. Church members, judged by seven congregants, compete for a $50 entry fee subsidy and a chance to represent Havelock at a national cook-off next fall. Forty minutes into the festival, 12 church members vied for top honors while 20,000 attendees have been noted in past years.

Bayboro County faces EEOC discrimination complaint over planner hiring

Judy Bolin, a four year county employee, accuses the county of sex discrimination in denying her an interview for the county planner job now held by Chris Watson. The EEOC complaint was filed Sept. 30 and served Oct. 4 with response due Oct. 21.

New Telephone Directory Aims for October 31 Distribution

The Setashous Gane announces new telephone books to be distributed Monday to residents of Aurora Bayboro Havelock Maysville New Bern Oriental Pollocksville Trenton and Vanceboro. The directory includes a customer guide toll call charts and an eight page community information section with details on area cities education and services.
