Plea deal links witness to 1991 Bridgeton murder

A Carteret County man agreed to a federal plea bargain that may compel his testimony against accomplice Carl Vincent in the 1991 death of Bridgeton native Sandra LaNoce. Michael White, 20, of Newport, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact, risking life in prison and a $500,000 fine, with sentencing in about three months.

Hearing on proposed adult business regulation Tuesday

New Bern Board of Aldermen plan two public hearings at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall on regulating adult entertainment businesses and mobile homes. The adult ordinance would locate businesses at least 500 feet from residential zones and 1,000 feet from day cares and schools. Mayor Bayliss will be away for a White House ceremony but supports the ordinance. The mobile home amendment would allow placements on private drives with street access and require water sewer and refuse services at the public street right of way.

Block Island returns to Fort Macon after 40 day Caribbean duty

The U S Coast Guard cutter Block Island 110 feet with 15 crew members shipped back to its Fort Macon homeport Saturday after a 40 day mission in the Florida Straits as part of Operation Able Vigil aiding 30 000 Cuban and Haitian refugees. Diligence cutter remains in the Caribbean repatriating Haitians to Port au Prince while Gentian and Staten Island also returned from Caribbean duty the prior week.

Deadline to mail voter registration today for November election

Today is the last day for voters to mail in registration forms for the November 8 election. Forms must be postmarked today to be eligible. In person registration remains available at board of election offices through October 17.

North Carolina marine biologists report Dermo infections remain higher in Pamlico County near Mouse Harbor, with Hyde and Carteret counties showing milder levels. MSX rates are low this year, and oysters are showing signs of partial rebound, though Dermo could threaten harvests into November if water temps stay warm and salinity drops. Dermo and MSX do not harm humans.

Teens discover infant alone on Ellington Street

Two New Bern teens, 7 and 15, found a 15 month old asleep on a pillow beside a box fan and extension cords at a home on Ellington Street around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. They alerted police. the mother was located around 2 a.m. on National Avenue. Investigators weigh charges of child abandonment and endangerment.
