Empty Stocking Fund tops $1,801 for Craven area fund

Salvation Army and Sun Journal report the Empty Stocking Fund in Craven and Pamlico counties has raised 1801 in cash this year. 650 families are registered for help this Christmas including a Craven County mother with two children. Donations can be made at the Sun Journal office or Salvation Army locations with checks to the Empty Stocking Fund and mailed to Sun Journal or the Salvation Army.

Christmas Returns Stolen Cash Sent to Mailbox

Barbara Husk of Yard Sale Lady's Consignment Shop in New Bern recovered a $600 cash bag taken during a Saturday yard sale. A caller told Husk’s husband the money was in the mailbox, and someone anonymously returned it after two days of concern. Husk praised the honesty and plans to pay customers.

Have lock Police hunt a man who claimed Army sharpshooter status and robbed the Cover to Cover bookstore on US 70. Officers say the suspect, described as a short white man with blue or green eyes, was last seen after tying up a female clerk and taking cash while smelling of alcohol. Marine Sgt. Michael Andersen aided the scene, confirming the clerk’s account and helping secure the store as investigators chase leads.

NAACP slander case dismissed in Craven County

A Craven County judge tossed the slander suit by NAACP Craven County president Reverend W G Hickman against Ben Watford for lack of grounds. Watford, Craven County Democratic Party chair, denied making derogatory remarks about Hickman to Diane Hayes. Hickman aimed for 10000 in punitive and 10000 in compensatory damages and says he will appeal and pursue further action.

Dover man shot in Kinston leaves him in critical condition

Tyrone Williams, 20, of Dover R-2, was found with gunshot wounds to the head and leg and remains in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition. Ronald Jackson, 18, of Kinston, is jailed on a single count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, with two weapons recovered, a .38 caliber and a .22 caliber.

Realini to join Havelock council Dec. 12

Ruby Realini, a 65 year old Republican and longtime Havelock Elementary Library worker, will replace Lee K. Allen on the Havelock city commission December 12. She advocates youth programs, local job creation, and broader shopping options, and has sponsored a Little League team for over 20 years.
