Trade House races to big margin on GATT vote

Lawmakers seek a 100 vote House victory to push the 124 nation GATT pact forward as key senators remain unsure. President Clinton ramps up pressure with senior aides and former presidents backing ratification amid a lame duck session and a four hour floor debate led by Rep. Sam Gibbons. The pact slashes tariffs, broadens rules to agriculture and services, and creates a World Trade Court to referee disputes. Major supporters include House leaders from both parties and onetime opponents say a 150 to 180 vote showing would be a win.

Marines Move to Adriatic as Bosnia crisis lingers

The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, about 2,200 Marines and sailors, has been repositioned from a Mediterranean routine deployment to the Adriatic Sea aboard the USS Nassau USS Ponce and USS Gunston Hall. Navy and DoD officials say no buildup is underway. the force is a contingency able to protect UN personnel or evacuate civilians if needed.

Rehearsals Begin for Handel's Messiah by Local Choir

Hank Waters and Bill Harris rehearse at Centenary United Methodist Church for the 14th annual Messiah performance directed by James Ogle. The Boise Philharmonic Association presents the 150-member chorus, sponsored by four New Bern churches, with the North Carolina Symphony orchestra. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday and 4:30 p.m. Monday with tickets at the Bank of the Arts.

NABE forecasters see slower growth and tame inflation through 1999

A NABE survey of 47 top forecasters indicates US growth cooling to 2.7 percent in 1995 from 3.8 this year, with GDP expanding 2.4 to 2.6 percent each quarter. Inflation trims to about 3.4 percent through 1999, while unemployment slips to 5.8 percent by 1995, amid higher rates and modest wage gains.
