Holiday weekend traffic largely problem free in three counties

Staff reports say Thanksgiving weekend was virtually trouble free for Craven, Jones and Pamlico motorists. State police logged fewer DWI arrests than usual, no serious or fatal wrecks occurred, and patrols at Booze It and Lose It checkpoints found several violations including four DWI, three speeding, and others. In Jones County, three DWI arrests accompanied 42 speeding citations and other violations, with no serious accidents reported.

Biker in serious condition after Friday wreck

New Bern man Jay Lynn Holmes 38 remains in serious condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital after a Friday night collision on Neuse Boulevard. Holmes was riding toward Chattawka Lane when his bike hit a 1991 Chevrolet driven by George Ray Conner 39. Conner and two passengers were unhurt. Holmes had been drinking prior to the crash. Authorities reported no charges.

Aldermen weigh enforcing New Bern attendance rule

New Bern aldermen consider enforcing a policy requiring appointees to miss no more than three meetings a year. City Manager Bill Hartman notes the rule exists but has rarely if ever been applied. Julius Parham and Barbara Lee cite lagging attendance as boards seek reappointments. a report on the electric service board shows Robert Brown attending all meetings while Pat McClanahan attended only one.

NCRR eyes 15 year $8 million lease with Norfolk Southern

NCRR proposes to lease its 317 mile line and properties to Norfolk Southern for 8 million annually, with inflation adjustments starting 1996 and potential two 15 year extensions. The plan targets real estate investment trust status, subject to negotiations on tax rules, litigation, and environmental parcels.

Santa Visits Twin Rivers Mall Thrills Local Kiddos

Unemployed moms seek help from Empty Stocking Fund

Two Pamlico County single mothers, 21 and 25, with young children, seek aid from the Empty Stocking Fund sponsored by the Salvation Army and Sun Journal.
