Private study disputes high shrimp bycatch claims
A Gulf and South Atlantic Fisheries Development Foundation study counters federal reports on bycatch in shrimp trawling. Analyzed across 2,500 tows in the Southeast, the finding suggests a bycatch ratio of three to four pounds per one pound of shrimp, far below the often cited ten to one. The work also shows bycatch can be reduced by up to a third with bycatch reduction devices like turtle excluders, and notes industry input shaped these efforts.
