NAACP finances show pattern of red ink and deficits
Washington AP reports sworn statements by NAACP officers reveal ongoing financial instability with a liquid asset deficit of 500000 when Chavis became executive director in 1993 and a 38 million deficit cited by critics. Depositions suggest earlier issues dating to Hooks tenure and delayed checks totaling about 500000 in 1992. Hooks denies deficit, calling it a cash flow problem with a reported 600000 surplus at retirement.
