Salute the Boot honors veterans along Cherry Point route

In Havelock a display titled Salute the Boot places 200 pairs of military boots, each with a flag, from City Hall to Cherry Point. Photographs attach to two laces including Paul Bostwick of the 248 Screaming Eagles. Organized by Marlene Lynch and the Havelock Appearance Commission, the exhibit has run six years, with boots collected year round and arranged the Thursday before Memorial Day.

Veterans Honor Ceremony At National Cemetery Observes Memorial Day

Residents gathered at the National Cemetery on National Avenue for a Memorial Day event featuring Sousa tunes by the Craven Community Concert Band. More than 7,000 graves were honored as the Marine Corps Color Guard presented colors and a rifle salute with taps. Retired Rear Admiral Jay DeLoach spoke about children placing flags and thanked veterans after the service.

Drowning in Pine Knoll Shores claims a life after rescue

A Sunday water rescue at Memorial Park beach access in Pine Knoll Shores ended with a man dead. Public bystanders aided three minor children with flotation devices before responders arrived. Lifeguards and EMS transported the children in good condition, but the man could not be saved. Atlantic Beach and Indian Beach crews assisted. Red flags indicated high rip current risk.
