After 20 years of service the Vanceboro Christian Help Center reports dwindling donations due to COVID-19. The food pantry has nearly empty shelves and volunteers, many seniors, stay home. Pantry now serves boxed meals only Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 to noon, three months of losses.
Mark Hartman of Eastern NC Cinema outlines cautious reopening of Bruin Theater and Bear Town Cinema 6 in New Bern as Phase 2 could lift restrictions by May 22. With Hollywood delayed, studios wait for broader market openings before releasing new product. Hartman aims to gauge demand for already released titles before resuming all nine screens. A varied lineup is planned, depending on studio libraries and theater capacity.
In Onslow Craven and Lenoir counties districts tackle food insecurity with meal hubs and bus deliveries. Onslow runs 13 hubs, Craven uses buses labeled Free Meals on Big Wheels, Lenoir operates five hubs and 20 bus distribution sites. Any child under 18 can receive meals without being in school or with a parent present.
Aileen Green of Holly Ridge and Erin Peoples of Havelock remember sons lost to illness this Mother s Day. Green s 27 year old Randy died after seizures and heart failure on April 15, inspiring her to grow Able Buddies into a nonprofit assisting special needs families. Randy s organ donation offers solace as Green pursues further aims like employment opportunities for disabled youth.
