North Carolina began Phase One reopenings Friday at 5 pm amid 13,868 COVID-19 cases and 527 deaths statewide. DHHS reports 471 new positive cases across 99 counties from 7,285 tests, with a 6.5 percent positivity rate and 515 current hospitalizations.
About 200 inmates in North Carolina will finish their sentences outside prison to curb COVID 19 spread. The Department of Public Safety aims to release higher risk prisoners, with roughly 500 considered, excluding violent offenders. The move follows directives to reduce crowding, amid a 5 percent population drop to under 33,100. Civil rights groups have sued for more releases. A judge gave the system a Friday deadline for safety details and further moves.
Smoke poured from the Prohibition restaurant on Craven Street as firefighters arrived at 8 41 a m Friday to battle an interior blaze. The building was empty at the time and curbside service was in operation. Firefighters from New Bern, about 20 strong, contained the fire while Colleen Roberts said an active fire was found inside and Bobby Boyd noted an investigation into the cause.
