House OKs lifting prison cap in January
The House tentatively approved lifting the prison cap 109-7, saying moving the date to January would keep about 3,185 inmates from parole. Rep. Sean Lemmond cited potential savings of about 20,000 crimes yearly, while noting a $14 million extra cost for prison space next year. The plan contrasts with a Senate version aiming for October 1996. The debate links beds, inmates, and costs amid a prior cap tied to overcrowding fears. Brubaker also announced a GOP push for a special committee to probe alleged political harassment of state workers, prompted by an aide pressure claim involving Gov. Hunt and a $2,000 contribution. The Department of Correction said it has asked the SBI to investigate.
