New Bern trims general fund electric transfer in budget

New Bern aldermen approve a 54.76 million dollar 1995 96 budget with a 0.99 percent rise over last year. The plan keeps property tax at 47 cents per 100 valuation and utility fees level while raising dumpster charges and funding four new positions including three firefighters in January and one utility billing rep. A 2.25 percent cost of living increase for 379 city employees and merit pay funds are included. The city plans 3.5 percent electric fund transfer to general funds and borrows about 3.1 million for police, equipment, a gym floor, and street projects. Generators to cut electric bills and a new pool project are noted, with some outside requests cut or deferred.
