Researchers draw bleak portrait of teen health
CHICAGO AP The health of America's youngsters is deteriorating due to violence pregnancy and drug and alcohol abuse doctors from Johns Hopkins say in JAMA. The review notes violence remains a major health problem with one in four youths ages 10 to 16 reporting assault or abuse and 34 percent of sexually abused youths planning suicide. Marijuana use among eighth graders has doubled since 1991. Parents and school programs influence contraception and delay of sexual activity while gun access reduction could curb deaths from self harm, which remains a leading cause of adolescent mortality.
