Gene transplants make male fruit flies court other males
NIH researchers Shang-Ding Zhang and Ward F. Odenwald report in PNAS that grafting a gene into male fruit flies caused homoerotic courtship chains and circles with five or more males and no aversive signals. When females entered, males persisted with partners. but the same gene in females did not trigger lesbian behavior.

Floods test new crop insurance program in Midwest
The floods sweeping thousands of farm acres test the first major use of a revised crop insurance system. Aimed at cutting disaster costs, the plan links benefits to insurance purchase, with about 201 million acres insured this year, roughly 80 percent of eligible land. Farmers face less payout than under prior aid, but gain predictability and taxpayer savings. California floods spur calls to refine area definitions and eligibility for noninsured aid.
