Newport teen hurt in house fire listed in fair condition

Chris Fletcher, 15, suffered upper body burns after a fire started in his bedroom on Wesley Lane while he played with a lighter. His mother and sister helped him outside, rolled him on the ground, and used a garden hose to extinguish flames before firefighters arrived. The incident caused minor heat and smoke damage beyond the bedroom.

Arrest order withdrawn after appearance waived in Craven case

Michael Smith Wood twenty of 4804 Morton Road had an arrest order withdrawn after his attorney David P Voerman filed a waiver of first appearance. Wood is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill for a July 16 shooting that left Jason Everett Emerson eighteen wounded at a private gathering where owners were away. Emerson has since been released from Craven Regional Medical Center.
