VA expands benefits for Agent Orange related cancers

The VA publishes new Federal Register rules to extend disability payments to veterans with multiple myeloma and respiratory cancers linked to Agent Orange exposure. The rules follow a National Academy of Sciences study and add Hodgkin's disease and porphyria cutanea tarda to the entitlement list, with survivor claims also covered. Power Squadron salutes poster winners with cruise

The Cape Lookout Power Squadron in Havelock will honor poster winners for Safe Boating Week with a Neuse River cruise and luncheon on Wednesday. The event departs Union Point at 10 a.m. and a noon ceremony will be held at the Sheraton Grand hotel. Winners include Heather Carlson and Aaron Sparrow in sixth grade, Ginny Pendleton, Amy French, Jessica Birdson and Chris Wahl in seventh grade, and Billy Dill, Kent Smith and Donnell Parker in eighth grade.

Congress mulls end to Upton Jones beachfront aid program

A congressional panel move to cut funding would scrap the Upton Jones program within the federally subsidized flood insurance plan. Since 1988 it paid 11.2 million on over 200 North Carolina claims to move or demolish erosion threatened oceanfront homes.

Craven CC Faces Third Salary Suit Over Pay Gaps

Donna Webb Durham, Craven Community College's only female industrial technology instructor, files a federal salary discrimination suit alleging pay inequities favoring men. Havelock hosts belt check amid storm and ticket push

A roadside Click It or Ticket checkpoint in Havelock Craven County attracted 1,600 scheduled checks statewide and drew a back up as a thunderstorm paused enforcement. Col. Robert Barefoot noted 16 tickets issued in the first hour while campaign data credits 45 lives saved and 320 serious injuries avoided since September.

Conspiracy trial moved to Craven County for murder plot

The trial of Jack Alan Edwards, 49, Merritt, for conspiring to kill his mother in law, Mary Banks, will be heard in Craven County after a judge granted a venue change due to pretrial publicity. Wilmington Hosts National Conference on Coastal Management

Wilmington will commemorate the 20th anniversary of North Carolina’s Coastal Area Management Act by hosting a national conference on coastal management issues and innovations September 7 to 9. The event will address environmental access and coastal protection as part of the coast celebration.
